We then found that the belt accessed from above had turned to goo and needed removal cleaning, one of two below stretched. It rewinds and fast forwards noisily fairly slowly but will do it until the tape end is found or stopped. It is a fairly high end Stereo Hi-Fi machine, very solidly made. It probably needs the correct belts and lubrication, but more may be needed, so it is sold for parts or repair.
The drum spins. Now when play is pushed it tries but doesn't fully pull the tape in to wrap around drum and gives up, sometime powering down. The stretched one is included for reference. We lacked the correct ones but had a universal belt kit and changed two bad with those.
